The post graduation work permit (PGWP) is a crucial pathway for international graduates aiming to work in Canada, but change is on the horizon.

This year, more than 300,000 PGWPs are expiring, and immigration authorities have decided not to offer a blanket extension.

This abrupt policy shift has left graduates in the GTA, Surrey, and Montreal racing for limited work permits or navigating permanent residence (PR) streams like the CEC and PNP.

Competition is fierce for Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) supported roles, with hiring slowdowns compounding the urgency.

Graduates unable to secure work or PR status are forced to consider temporary options like visitor visas, risking job loss and instability.

The uncertainty doesn’t just affect newcomers, it ripples through entire communities relying on their skills and ambition.

File Before Your Permit Dies — Not After

Whichever path you choose, LMIA job offer, PR application, or Express Entry, the one move that protects you no matter what is filing your next application before your PGWP expires. Miss that, and you lose your legal right to work in Canada the moment the clock runs out.

What to do:

Submit your next application through your IRCC secure account before your expiry date, not on it.
Save your submission confirmation number. This is your proof of maintained status if anything gets questioned later.
Watch for your WP-EXT letter. It confirms you're allowed to keep working while IRCC processes your file, show it to your employer if asked.

Pro tip: IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before your permit expires. Filing on your expiry date itself is too late to guarantee maintained status.
