Featured Story

More than 1.4 million work permits will expire in Canada by the end of 2026, putting temporary residents at risk as Ottawa tightens immigration pathways.

Holders of PGWP, spousal, and International Mobility Program permits now face stricter rules on extensions and open permits, with increased scrutiny on applications and fewer PR options.

Delays or last-minute action may lead to status loss or even removal orders.

High-risk groups include those with expired or soon-to-expire permits, anyone studying without a valid study permit, and PR applicants waiting over 18 months.

Ottawa is expediting protected person applications, but most temporary residents must act swiftly, check expiry dates, clarify pathways, and gather documents urgently.

Consult an RCIC quickly if you’re out of status.

Your future hinges on what you do this week, not next month.

Pro Tip

Hack of The Week

Check Your Work Permit Expiry Date & Take Action

You have one job this week: verify your exact permit expiry date and determine your next legal status option. Waiting until the last month is how people fall into precarious status.

What to do:

  1. Log into your IRCC account and check your permit end date. Screenshot or print this page.
  2. Assess your options NOW:
    • Can you apply for permanent residence (Express Entry, PNP, or your province's program)? Start gathering documents this week.
    • Do you have a job offer that would support a work permit extension? Ask your employer to prepare an offer letter.
    • Are you waiting on a PR decision? Check IRCC's processing times, if you're within range, apply for a bridging open work permit.
    • Are you studying? Ensure you have a valid study permit before June 27 (the study exemption policy expires that day).
  3. Consult a regulated immigration consultant (RCIC) if your situation is complex, many offer free initial consultations.

Pro tip: Do not wait for your permit to expire before taking action. Apply for extensions or status changes 4–6 weeks before expiry. Once you're out of status, options vanish.

National Resource Spotlight

Find a Regulated Immigration Consultant

What it is: Directory of licensed immigration professionals who can assess your situation, explain your options, and represent you with IRCC. RCICs are regulated and accountable, not the same as immigration lawyers or notaries.

Who it helps: Anyone with a complex permit situation, family sponsorship questions, or who needs professional representation. Many offer free 15-minute consultations.

How to access it:

  • Website: https://iccrc-crcic.ca/find-a-representative
  • Cost: Usually $500–$2,000 depending on complexity. Some offer payment plans.
  • Pro tip: Always verify they're RCIC-registered on the official directory. Avoid notaries and unlicensed "immigration specialists."

Becoming Canadian

Canadianism of the Week

"Don't Leave It to the Last Minute"

Canadians are obsessed with early planning and deadlines, missing one is seen as careless, even with a good reason. When your work permit expires in 3 months, a Canadian employer or immigration officer assumes you've known about this for a year and will judge you for not starting the renewal process already.

Real example: You tell your IRCC officer at an appointment that you're applying for a work permit extension "because it expires next month." They will look confused and say, "You've known this date for years. Why are you applying now?" Start early, it's the Canadian way.
